Tucumcari Film Festival Wraps Up with Surprise Award and Exciting News for the Future

The 2024 Tucumcari Film Festival came to a close on nearly two weeks ago, and it was a night to remember! Not only did we celebrate the incredible films screened throughout the weekend, but we also honored a very special couple who has been instrumental in keeping the magic of cinema alive in Tucumcari.

Curtain Call Award for the Odeon Theatre

Bobby Hockaday, the festival's chief organizer, presented a surprise Curtain Call Award to Robert Lopez and Christy Dominguez, the husband-and-wife team who have owned and operated the historic Odeon Theatre since 2013. Praised as "stewards" of the theater, Robert and Christy were recognized for their tireless efforts in preserving this Tucumcari landmark. From adding surround sound to installing a new roof and renovating the concession area, their dedication has ensured that future generations can continue to experience movies on the big screen at the Odeon.

Big Wins for "Highway," "The GandyDancer," and "Tin Can"

The festival also awarded top honors to several films. "Highway," directed by Douglas Alan Cunningham, took home both Best of Stories of the Southwest and Best of Modern Western. "The GandyDancer," directed by Stephen Burhoe, impressed the judges with a win for Best of Show/Judges' Choice Award as well as Best of Retro-Futurism Frontier. Pat Battistini's "Tin Can" was a double winner as well, receiving the Sheriff's Star award and Best of Spanish/Latino/Hispanic stories.

A Celebration of Filmmaking and New Mexico's Film Industry

The festival wasn't just about screenings and awards. The Odeon also hosted two exciting panel discussions focused on the booming New Mexico film industry. Attendees learned about the state's incentive programs that make New Mexico a top destination for filmmakers, along with resources available to aspiring crew members and actors.

Lights, Camera, Action! How to Get Involved in Film

Background Actors Association of New Mexico President, actor & filmmaker, Ruby Garcia offered a fun and informative presentation on how to become an extra in a film.  Her enthusiastic personality and sing-along session had the audience engaged and ready for their close-up!

The 2024 Tucumcari Film Festival was a resounding success, showcasing the power of film and its potential to benefit our community. We look forward to seeing you all again next year for another exciting celebration of cinema!
